Woven Swatches - exploring kolors through material
Komplementärzustände
From 15-17 May, the designer duo Meyers + Fügmann present their artistic and conceptual exploration of the Kolors colour collection.
The colour experts and textile designers Sarah Meyers and Laura Fügmann have intensively analysed the Kolors collection, experimented with it and added to it. With their expert eye - based on colour theories - they categorise the palette according to different models and use the loom to open up multi-layered narratives around colour, context and design.
Colour experts and textile designers Sarah Meyers and Laura Fügmann draw on their expertise in colour theory and weaving techniques to offer new perspectives on colour. With woven swatches, material combinations, and sculptural objects, they explore the relativity of colour perception and emphasise the interplay between light, texture, and context.
The loom functions as a colour mixing machine: weft and warp intersect at right angles, and various bindings produce different perceptions of colour. Colours overlap, nearly touch, or blend together—creating visual tension and new chromatic constellations. It’s a play of proportion, rhythm, and space. The thread connects the individual pieces in a narrative form.
The exhibition invites reflection: Is colour material, a physical phenomenon, or a feeling? Between light and shadow, colour unfolds—as appearance, atmosphere, and medium. Inspirations and references range from Josef Albers’ The Interaction of Color to Robert Wilson’s afterimage phenomena and the meditative surfaces of colour field painting. Echoing Ingo Nussbaumer’s complementary spectra, Meyers + Fügmann explore colour as a dynamic system—one of transition, state, and relation.
The exhibition opens on 15 May 2025 at 16:00. The designers will be present at the opening and on the two following days. The exhibition can also be visited until 18 July 2025, by appointment or every Friday from 11:00 to 15:00, in the presence of the designers.
